What: Expanding micro level efforts to a 1000-village scale and beyond ..... Uma is a bright young girl from a small village in Tamil Nadu. Too poor to go to college after 12th grade, this bubbly 18-year old started a support center for children in her village who go to school but cannot read or write! Every evening Uma spends 2 hours with about 20 children helping them learn to read and write, add and subtract. Can 100's of Umas be organized to lead a People's School Movement?

About the speakers: Balaji Sampath is an AID JeevanSaathi, who returned to India in 1997 after a Ph.D. from Univ of MD and a crucial role in building AID chapters across the US. He has been working full-time with AID-India and Tamil Nadu Science Forum (TNSF). A captivating speaker, Balaji is on a short visit to US to share his experiences. Kalpana has worked with TNSF for several years, playing a key role in the women's savings movement MALAR, with 7000 members in Kanyakumari district.
Spreading village-level efforts to a 1000 villages is beyond the scope of most NGO efforts. The challenge is to organize the expansion while maintaining the quality at village level. Balaji and Kalpana will share many stories and experiences that form part of these remarkable initiatives. Each village's story of action and commitment is behind the statistics and achievements.

Where: Cross Cultural Center, UCSD

When: Oct 12th 2003, 4PM

SYNOPSIS: How does art survive in a regime of fear in Kashmir? An illiterate community has sustained a centuries-old tradition in the face of debilitating social and cultural changes. Although perenially intimidated by the corruption, violence and intolerance that prevail in Kashmir, the bhands are still affirming a commitment to their theatre, to the critical potential of its form and the liberating joys of performance. The Play is on.... follows the two groups as they prepare for public performances, a rare phenomenon today. For the bhands, who daily witness the erosion of their way of life, each performance represents both a change as well as a repetition of the same brutal fact: that they are not free to share their revolutionary spirit.

Diwali Mela - November 2002

AID San Diego participated in the annual Diwali Mela held in San Diego on November 2nd, 2002. The Diwali Mela is the biggest event which brings Indians of San Diego together and in the past has served as a good forum for AID San Diego to reach the local community. This year too the AID Booth attracted many enthusiastic visitors and we had an opportunity to talk about our various projects. We featured ``The Hundred Block Plan'' and the ``Bilgaon Microhydel'' projects with two attractive posters and they evoked a lot of interest. While professional Mehndi and an entertaining Tarot Reading done by AID volunteers were huge money spinners, laptop-based quizzes on Indian Mythology and Cricket got over 100 people to visit our stall. Volunteers waving Indian flags (which were also available for sale) attracted people to our booth where they had an opportunity to buy AID merchandise and calendars and pick up our newsletters and sign in for more information. In all the event was a huge success helping raise hundreds of dollars for AID and more importantly creating an awareness about issues in India and the work done by AID.
